Caroline Timm had one proclamation on Saturday when it was all over:
“Running is hard!”
The Our Lady of Lourdes High School cross country runner had the right to be a bit overwhelmed, having competed in the New York State championships at Chenango Valley State Park. She finished the girls Class B 3.1-mile race in 18:28.80 to claim third place.
“I was kind of expecting around third, but I was hoping to get second. But overall it was a good race,” Timm said. “I had girls around me the entire time, but I was able to push off them, which helped me get a better time.”
Last year, Timm finished 16th in the Class B girls race.
Pawling’s Katelyn Huggard, too, found success in the Class C 5K. She placed fifth in a time of 19:18.
“Early in the year her goal was to be top five and she was. She was very happy with that,” Pawling coach Adam Muroski said of Huggard. “She didn’t start running until sophomore year. We’re really proud of her, where she came from and where she is now.”
And then there was John Jay’s Sean Murray. He finished 22nd in the Class A boys race, fresh off his Section 1 championship. Murray ran the course in 16:10.70 — which was roughly 18 minutes better than his time in sectionals.
Murray liked how he ran, but noticed some differences between the state meet and the section meet.
“I think I did very well during the race,” Murray said. “The field was much more competitive and the race went out a lot faster than I’m used to, but I was able to keep up with the lead pack.”
Arlington’s team of Matthew Dillon, Brendan Foley, Colin Waters, Joe Morrison, Michael Asselmeyer, Max Glazowski and Andrew Pfeifer placed seventh overall in Class A.
From Red Hook, Jack Hobson placed 25th in the Class B boys race (16.35.80).
As a team, the Haldane girls team comprised of Shannon Ferri, Taylor Farrell, Heather Winne, Meghan Ferri and Ruby McEwen finished eighth in the Class D run. Webutuck, which had Section 9 champion Taylor Edmundson as well as Abby Thomas, Sarah Meili, Abby Hoke and Julia Butts, placed 10th in Class D.
In Class C, the Spackenkill girls team, sporting Mya Hansen, Jeana Chun, Melissa Common, Beth Jenkins, Sahshe Gerard and Christina Li, finished 11th. Lindsay Demers and Heaven Swan, both of Dover, also competed in the Class C run. Swan placed 71st (21:24.80) while Demers was 84th (21:48.70).
Sarah Trainor of Franklin D. Roosevelt was 53rd in the Class A girls run (19.31.50).
Chris Estremera of Millbrook was 74th in the Class D boys run (18:30.30), while teammates Aldo Martinez (19:24.50) and Ryan King (19:35.50) finished 93rd and 97th, respectively. Also for the Blazers, Kaitlyn Daly placed 78th in the girls Class D 5K (23:07.50).
Nicholas Farrell, Adam Silhavy, Ellis Osterfeld, Matthew Mikalsen, Jonas Petkus, Andrew Silhavy and Kyle Kisslinger of Haldane placed eighth in the boys Class D race.
