It was a tale of two halves.
The Our Lady of Lourdes High School football team was stunned in the first, facing off with visiting Rye. But by the time the Warriors made some adjustments after the game’s first 24 minutes, the Garnets had enough to win.
Lourdes lost, 42-18, in a regular season rematch of last year’s Section 1 Class A championship game.
“Our kids came back (in the second half) and played much better,” Warriors coach Brian Walsh said. “Overall, we lost to a good football team.”
Rye held a 28-6 lead after the first half.
The Warriors came out strong in the second, though, receiving two touchdown carries from quarterback Paul Holze. Holze carried the ball in from the 1-yard line and the 8-yard line.
Jaheim Jones scored the Warriors’ first touchdown in the first quarter on a 62-yard run. He racked up 162 yards on the ground on 15 carries.
“We had some bright spots,” Walsh added. “I was encouraged by that.”
Lourdes played without Joe Scaglione, who is recovering from a broken arm. Walsh said he hopes Scaglione is back for the next game, which takes place Friday. The Warriors (1-2) host Hendrick Hudson.
“That’s going to be a tough one,” Walsh said. “(Hendrick Hudson) really throws the ball well.”
